Sea State by J.M. Simpson book review

Book reviews, Mystery, Thriller
Sea State by J.M. Simpson is a book that picked for me as part of me followers picks of the year. if you don't know, at the start of the year, I asked all of my followers to pick a book and then I chose the 12 most-liked or recommended and put one as each month of the year. Sea State was one of these books after some people said it was a hidden gem. I can wholeheartedly agree. Please note that this article contains affiliate links. The Maid by Nita Prose book review

The Maid by Nita Prose book review

Book reviews, Crime, Mystery
During a haul of some of the cheapest paperbacks I could find on Amazon, I picked up the much talked about The Maid by Nita Prose. An appealing front cover and the promise of a unique main character pulled me in on this one and had me hoping for a new series to get stuck into (knowing there was a sequel and plans for a third). And Then There Were None by Agatha Christie book review

And Then There Were None by Agatha Christie book review

Book reviews, Crime, Mystery
Agatha Christie is widely considered the greatest crime writer to ever do it. Not only did she end up writing an incredibly large number of them, but some of the "cliches" and "tropes" that we experience in crime today were literally formed by her. This last point is no more true than the incredibly popular story of And Then There Were None. Oh and when I say popular, apparently only about five other books have ever sold more than this one book which is impressive for a woman who penned 75 books, 66 of which were full-length detective novels. The Girls Who Disappeared by Claire Douglas book review

Book reviews, Mystery, Thriller
I'm starting to really get into my thrillers. I think previously I wasn't appreciating the connecting plot and the interweaving stories that come with the genre. But as I've read more and taken more care to understand them, I've really began to appreciate it. The Girls Who Disappeared by Claire Douglas is another thriller that absolutely nails it for me with a generous, intelligent story and a cast of characters that do just enough to make me care. The Housemaid’s Secret by Freida McFadden book review

Book reviews, Mystery, Thriller
So often a book comes out that everybody starts talking about and then you read it and it’s a disappointment. This was not the case with The Housemaid which I was incredibly impressed by, even going as far as to include it in my top ten books of the year list. Please note that this article contains affiliate links. This means if you choose to purchase any products via the links below, I may receive a small commission at no extra cost to you. However, what can then happen is the author writes a sequel to this incredibly successful book and it’s awful because the magic isn’t there like in the first book. Once again, this is not…

Slow Horses by Mick Herron book review

Slow Horses by Mick Herron book review

Book reviews, Crime, Mystery, Thriller
I was starting to see Slow Horses by Mick Herron absolutely everywhere. I went to a celebration of a book launch at the end of last year where Mick Herron was mentioned, my own dad was reading the series and raving about it and it kept popping up as “popular” when I went to watch anything on Apple TV. So I thought it was time I delved into the world of Slough House and the MI5 rejects that work there. Please note that this article contains affiliate links. Helle & Death by Oskar Jensen book review

Helle & Death by Oskar Jensen book review

Book reviews, Crime, Mystery
I'm not the world's biggest crime fan. I think I feel a little bit like once you've read one crime book, you've sort of read a lot of them. However, sometimes a crime book comes along that's something just different enough to make it stand out for me. I think Helle & Death was just different enough to have me remember it for quite some time. Please note that this article contains affiliate links. The Christmas Appeal by Janice Hallett

Book reviews, Crime, Mystery
If you've read my previous reviews of anything by Janice Hallett, you'll know that I'm a huge fan of both her writing but also the way she writes her books. As opposed to a conventional chapter book, Hallett has written some fantastic books that use modern forms of media. You'll find yourself reading text messages, emails, posters and transcribed audio files to tell the story. The Christmas Appeal is Hallett's latest in this form. It's a Christmas special and it's the shortest yet. Please note that this article contains affiliate links. The Housemaid by Freida McFadden book review

Book reviews, Mystery, Thriller
I picked up The Housemaid because it was dirt cheap on Amazon - I'm talking £2.50 for a brand-new copy of the paperback. After finishing The Return of the King, I thought I'd pick something up a little lighter that didn't require quite as much time and effort to read/listen to. Enter The Handmaid.
