Yellowface by Rebecca F Kuang book review

Yellowface by Rebecca F Kuang book review

Book reviews, Contemporary Fiction
I picked up Yellowface because I’d heard quite a few people sing its praises and because all of the bookish stars aligned (I needed to pick up a book and it was on my “realistic TBR” and the audiobook became available). It’s an interesting book that discusses the topic of the affects of social media on authors but I’m not sure it quite does enough. Please note that this article contains affiliate links. Happy Place by Emily Henry book review

Happy Place by Emily Henry book review

Book reviews, Contemporary Fiction, Romance
I picked up Happy Place by Emily Henry some time ago from my local Asda (if you're American, this is a cheap supermarket we have here in the UK) for only £5 (about $6.50). After seeing a few people harp on about how good Emily Henry's books were, I decided to pick up my only one, Happy Place. Since finishing it I've heard it's not her best, but let's see what I thought of it prior to knowing this. Please note that this article contains affiliate links. A Little Life by Hanya Yanigahara book review

A Little Life by Hanya Yanigahara book review

Book reviews, Contemporary Fiction
A Little Life by Hanya Yanigahara is a book that I'd been hearing incredibly sad things about for months. After reposting my monthly follower choice reads over on my Instagram, every single time, someone would make a comment "A Little Life is going to ruin you". So when I finally got around to reading it, I had both high hopes but also tempered expectations due to hype. Please note that this article contains affiliate links. Us by David Nicholls book review

Us by David Nicholls book review

Book reviews, Contemporary Fiction, Romance
One Day by David Nicholls is one of my favourite books of all time. I'd solidly say it's my favourite "romance" book of all time. So when the stars aligned when I saw Us by him sitting on my parents' bookshelf and then it became available to listen to via Libby, I knew it was time to read another of his. High Rise by Vanessa Lee book review

High Rise by Vanessa Lee book review

Book reviews, Contemporary Fiction
Every now and then a book tries to get a message across - whether it's highlighting underrepresented minorities or climate change. And sometimes this is done well and subtly and then other times it's not done so well and feels pushed in your face. Unfortunately, High Rise is a book that does this. It wants to talk about climate change, but also talk about human stories and none are done particularly well. Please note that this article contains affiliate links. One Day by David Nicholls book review

Book reviews, Contemporary Fiction, Romance
Sometimes a book comes along that really stays with you for a long time after you’ve finished reading it. For me most recently One Day was that book. It may well be the best love story that I’ve ever read, featuring a beautifully difficult, honest and brutal portrayal of two people who never really know each other’s worth and yet forever want to be with one another. Eleanor Oliphant is Completely Fine by Gail Honeyman book review

Book reviews, Contemporary Fiction
I think I'm quite some years behind on the Eleanor Oliphant is Completely Fine hype but it still felt like a read that was incredibly relevant and, if I had to guess, started off a trend of first-person quirky women narrators. Since then we've had quite a few first-person contemporary narratives that feature a lot of dark humour. Please note that this article contains affiliate links. The Mysterious Case of the Alperton Angels by Janice Hallett

Book reviews, Contemporary Fiction, Crime, Mystery, Thriller
If you’ve read any of my previous reviews of Janice Hallett books, you’ll know I’m an enormous fan. I’ve read The Appeal and The Twyford Code and I was a massive fan of the way that Hallett presented the books using different forms of media: emails, text messages, paper clippings etc. The Mystery Case of the Alperton Angels is very much the same sort of thing but this time I think she may have written her most exciting and interesting story yet! Us Against You by Fredrik Backman book review

Book reviews, Contemporary Fiction, Mystery
If you’ve ever read any of my Fredrik Backman reviews before, you’ll know that he’s solidly one of my favourite writers. He has an incredible ability to write almost poetic books that balance humour and serious topics so perfectly. Us Against You is the second book in the Beartown trilogy, picking up almost directly after the first book with the town in trouble after a huge incident caused so many problems in the previous book. Carrie Soto is Back by Taylor Jenkins Reid book review

Book reviews, Contemporary Fiction
I’ve read a few books by Taylor Jenkins Reid with my first being Malibu Rising which I thought was good but nothing amazing to then the incredible The Seven Husbands of Evelyn Hugo and Daisy Jones and the Six, two books that will forever be on my list of the best books I’ve ever read. Taylor Jenkins Reid (or TJR as I’m gonna refer to her so I don’t have to keep typing out her full name) specialises in writing books about lifetimes. They’re often stories of incredibly famous fictional people who have lived incredible lives to get to where they are today. Carrie Soto is Back is exactly the same. Please note that this article contains affiliate links. This means that if you choose to purchase any products via…
